The Faculty of Sciences, in collaboration with external partners, has established an Excellence Fellowship Program to support outstanding and highly motivated candidates who intend to pursue a Master of Science in any of the disciplines covered by the Faculty. Admission criteria can be consulted on the relevant Master web pages. French proficiency is no longer a formal requirement for the Masters of the Faculty of sciences.
Application deadline: 15 March (for Masters starting in September).
Why choose a Master in biology in Geneva?
Research projects done during the Master in Biology relate to fields as diverse as molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, evolution, developmental biology, plant or animal biology, anthropology, physiology, microbiology or biomedical research. This course of studies offers improvement of practice knowledge, thanks to work performed in the laboratory.
It also offers the possibility to carry out training courses in other fields such as marine biology, ecology, as well as tropical or alpine botany.
In addition to the Master in Biology, with an open choice of classes, several specialized orientations offer a focused program (compulsory classes and restricted choices).

Stem cells organize themselves into pseudo-embryos
In collaboration with the University of Cambridge and the EPFL, the group of Denis Duboule has developed murine artificial pseudo-embryos capable of forming the three major axes of the body. These ‘gastruloids’, detailed on October 3, 2018 in Nature, possess a remarkable potential for the study of the early stages of normal or pathological embryonic development.
Measuring the tension of a cell with a fluorescent molecule
Researchers from UNIGE and the NCCR Chemical Biology, among which Robbie Loewith, have joined forces to create a fluorescent molecule to measure the tension of the cell plasma membrane. These results, published on August 27, 2018 in Nature Chemistry and Nature Cell Biology, pave the way for many applications, including in the detection of cancer cells, which typically display aberrantly high membrane tension.
